In Victoria, you must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner permit and begin supervised driving lessons.

• 16 years → Eligible to sit the learner permit test and start lessons with an instructor.

• 18 years → Minimum age to apply for a probationary (P) licence after holding a learner permit and meeting logbook requirements.

• 21 years and older → If you pass your driving test at 21 or over, you can go directly to a Green P licence, skipping the Red P stage.

Driving schools, including Yarra City Driving School, require learners to hold a valid learner permit before starting lessons.

A: There are a few important factors to keep in mind:

• Disability-related needs Funding is based on how your disability affects your ability to learn to drive, so this must be clearly documented.

• Specialised instructors Lessons must be delivered by instructors experienced in supporting people with disability.

• Cost The NDIS will fund a specific number of hours at the rate listed in the approved quote.

• Vehicle modifications If required, the NDIS may also fund adaptive equipment or vehicle modifications to support safe driving.

To use your NDIS funding for driving lessons, follow these steps:

• Include it in your NDIS Plan Add “learning to drive” as a goal, linking it to your independence and daily living.

• Get an OT assessment A driver-trained occupational therapist will assess your skills, recommend modifications, and confirm if you’re fit to drive.

• Obtain a quote The OT works with an NDIS-approved driving instructor to prepare a detailed quote for lessons and supports.

• Seek NDIS approval The OT report and quote are submitted to the NDIA for approval. If approved, funding is added to your plan.

• Start NDIS driving lessons Begin lessons with the NDIS instructor, making sure they align with the number of sessions approved in your plan.
